Sandra Day O’Connor Institute For American Democracy

“We are fortunate in the United States to have a stable and a durable democratic government. But we can’t be complacent in assuming this good fortune will continue… It is the citizens of our nation who must preserve our system of government, and we cannot forget that.”

The concept of “Miranda rights” was enshrined in U.S. law following the 1966 Miranda v. Arizona Supreme Court decision, which found that the Fifth and Sixth Amendment rights of Ernesto Arturo Miranda had been violated during his arrest and trial. One of the most significant Supreme Court cases in U.S. history has its roots in Arizona and is closely tied to the state’s leading legal figures. Miranda has become a household word. Gary Stuart knew nearly all of the figures involved in Miranda.

From Justice O’Connor

“Society, at all levels, has a need to work together to solve the many challenges facing our nation. I know that it is possible for people to sit down together and engage in cooperative problem solving. My hope is to re-create a place that will be a center for problem-solving and for bringing together groups with divergent views. This is what I want the O’Connor Institute to stand for. We can do it. The possibilities are endless.”
